Meituan and Dianping: Food, Reviews and Group-Buy Deals

The DTE verdict

Use Dianping to discover and investigate; use Meituan to transact. They overlap, but this mental model makes restaurant search, vouchers, delivery and local services much easier to understand.

Which app should you open?

Open Dianping when the question is “Where should I go?” Its branch pages, user photos, menus and reviews are the research layer. Open Meituan when the question is “How do I buy, book or deliver this?” Search results overlap and interfaces change, so follow the order page rather than assuming a feature belongs exclusively to one app.

Search by a real constraint

Set the correct city and location, then filter by cuisine, distance, opening time, price and purpose. Searching the Chinese dish or neighborhood name usually produces better results than an English category.

Read reviews like evidence

Recent user photos and repeated specific comments are more useful than the headline rating. Compare lunch versus dinner, weekday versus weekend and the exact branch.

• Look for repeated mentions of portion, queue, noise and service
• Check whether the newest photos match the current menu
• Distinguish promotional content from ordinary customer photos
• Read low scores for patterns, not isolated anger
• For beauty or repairs, search reviews for upselling and hidden charges

Group-buy voucher checklist

Before purchasing 团购, read every restriction.

Rebuild the package price

A two-person set is only cheaper if you would have ordered most of it. Compare the voucher contents with the current menu, required supplements, tea or table fees and excluded dishes. A low headline price can hide a narrow time window, mandatory upgrade or branch restriction.

Use the voucher at the venue

Tell staff about the voucher before ordering or receiving the service. Let staff verify the code only when they are ready to apply it; do not mark it used in advance or send a screenshot to an unrelated account.

Reservation and queue are separate

A purchased voucher may still require a phone or in-app reservation, and a reservation may not eliminate a physical queue. Call or message the exact branch when the package says “需预约,” especially for weekends, holidays, beauty, photography or limited-seat experiences. Ask whether the desired time accepts the voucher before travelling.

Food delivery: compare checkout, not menu price

Packaging, delivery, minimum-order and small-order fees can erase a promotion. Confirm the address, gate and phone number, then compare the final amount and arrival time.

Payment can fail at the mini-program layer

A foreign card linked to Alipay or WeChat does not guarantee every local service or stored-value route will accept it. Test an ordinary merchant transaction before relying on a time-sensitive booking. If a transaction fails, keep the order inside the platform and try a supported payment method; do not send a private transfer to an unknown “helper.”

Build an address riders can use

Select the official Chinese compound or building result, then add building, unit, floor, room and the real delivery gate. Keep the phone reachable and add one short note instead of a translated paragraph.

When the order arrives wrong

Photograph the bag, order label and affected item immediately. In the order support flow, identify the exact missing, incorrect, spilled or unsafe item and request the appropriate remedy. Keep packaging until the case is resolved. For a food-safety concern, preserve evidence and seek medical help when symptoms require it.

Local services need a written scope

For cleaning, repairs, salons and photography, confirm what the package includes, travel fee, materials, duration, cancellation and any required upgrades inside platform chat. A low entry price can be a lead for upselling.

Refunds and problems

Use the order’s support flow and preserve photos, voucher restrictions and merchant messages. Meituan’s official help says ordinary processed refunds generally return to the original payment route in about one to seven working days, but the order page controls eligibility and timing. Coupon value or campaign discounts may not be returned in the same way as cash paid, and dated products can follow different rules.

Use a four-screen evidence pack

Before a higher-value service, save the listing title, “购买须知” restrictions, selected branch and payment confirmation. After a problem, add the merchant chat and current photos. This small evidence pack is much more useful than a long unsupported complaint.

Avoid private proxy payment

A stranger offering an extreme discount may be using unverifiable membership, stored value or funds that can later be disputed. Prefer platform vouchers, official memberships or a smaller bank offer you can explain.
