Where to Buy Groceries: Market, Hema, JD or Sam’s?

Choose by product type, freshness, basket size, storage and delivery—not brand familiarity or headline discounts.

Service models checked · prices vary by store and cityOfficial rules and changing app details were reviewed in Jul 2026. Field checks are identified separately where available.
01

The DTE verdict

There is no single best grocery channel. Use neighborhood markets for produce you can inspect, supermarkets for predictable staples, Hema or instant retail for urgent mixed baskets, JD for planned packaged goods and Sam’s only when your household can consume and store the pack size. Optimize the basket—not the app.

02

Choose by product, not loyalty

Split a normal week into fresh produce, meat and seafood, dairy, imported or specialty items, heavy household supplies and emergencies. The cheapest channel for vegetables can be poor value for milk; the fastest delivery route can be expensive for a monthly restock.

03

Use a neighborhood market confidently

Shop when turnover is active and learn whether the price is per 500 grams, kilogram, piece or box. Pointing is fine, but confirm the unit before the seller weighs the product. For meat or seafood, use busy licensed stalls, observe storage and ask for the cut or preparation you need.

Where Hema earns its place

Hema combines physical stores, prepared food, seafood and scheduled or rapid delivery in eligible areas. It is useful when you need traceable packaged goods, a small mixed basket or do not want to carry heavy items. Availability, minimums, fees and member benefits can differ by address, so judge the live checkout rather than a national claim.

05

Use instant retail for emergencies

Meituan Flash Buy and similar services aggregate nearby supermarkets, convenience stores and specialist retailers. They are excellent for forgotten ingredients, medicine-category products, water or late deliveries, but the same item can differ by merchant and time. Check the merchant name, pack size, expiry where shown, delivery fee and substitution messages.

06

Use JD for planned restocking

JD is strongest when the item is standardized: rice, drinks, paper goods, detergent, pet supplies and packaged food. Prefer clear seller identity, compare price per litre or kilogram and inspect expiry or production-date promises. A lower carton price is not a saving if you cannot store it or will not consume it in time.

07

Do the Sam’s calculation honestly

Membership warehouses work for families, shared homes and buyers who repeatedly use specific imported, frozen or private-label products. Add annual membership, transport or delivery, freezer and cupboard space, and likely waste. Divide by the quantity you will actually consume—not the quantity in the package.

DTE rule: bulk value is delivered cost per used unit. Food thrown away has an infinite effective price.
08

Build a five-item benchmark

Choose five items you buy repeatedly—such as milk, eggs, rice, chicken and detergent—and record the delivered unit price across your realistic channels once a month. This small benchmark exposes fake promotions without turning every grocery order into a research project.

09

Compare like with like

For produce, compare edible weight and grade rather than only kilograms; for meat, compare cut, bone and processing; for milk and drinks, compare volume; for paper goods, compare sheets or total length. A private-label pack can be good value, but a familiar-looking photo may hide a different size. Keep a note of the exact product that worked instead of repeating the research each week.

10

Read the checkout

Promotions can depend on minimum spend, membership, specific stores or payment routes. Packaging, delivery, small-order and peak-time fees may appear late. Before paying, confirm quantities, unit sizes, substitutions, delivery window and the final amount after coupons—not the crossed-out total.

11

Receiving and food safety

For chilled or frozen goods, receive promptly and check temperature, leaks, damaged seals and use-by information. Photograph a problem immediately beside the delivery label, keep the product until support responds and use the order’s official refund route. For serious symptoms or suspected poisoning, seek medical care instead of focusing only on the platform dispute.

12

A simple weekly system

Buy produce locally once or twice, use one planned online restock for heavy staples and reserve instant delivery for genuine gaps. Save the exact Chinese names of successful products and stores. This produces better quality and lower cost than trying to force every category through one membership or delivery app.
