Start with the workplace
Pin the exact building entrance, not only the district or metro station. Then identify several residential stations that remain within your acceptable door-to-door time.
Test rush hour
Use a weekday departure time and include walking, transfers, security checks and waiting. A direct 45-minute ride may feel easier than a 32-minute route with three transfers.
Check both directions
A route can be comfortable one way and overloaded the other. Also check the last train, taxi availability and the route home after evening activities.
Only then compare apartments
Filter homes around the stations that passed your commute test. This often finds better value than searching only famous expat neighborhoods.
