How to Set Up Alipay as a Foreigner

Register, link a supported international card, understand QR flows and troubleshoot payments.

01

The DTE verdict

Alipay is the best first “super app” for many new arrivals because payment, transport codes, ride-hailing, translation and mini programs can sit in one place. Set up WeChat Pay too: one route may work when the other does not.

02

Prepare the account correctly

Use the official app, keep SMS access and enter your identity exactly as shown in your passport. A supported international card can be linked, but acceptance, verification and limits can vary by card issuer and transaction.

  • Passport and a reachable mobile number
  • International card enabled for overseas online use
  • Access to the bank’s 3-D Secure or SMS verification
  • A backup card, cash and physical bank card for arrival week

03

Add a card and verify identity

Open the cards or payment-method area, add the card and complete the identity prompts. Interface labels change, so use the current English interface and in-app translation instead of copying an old screenshot. Never let a stranger “help” through screen sharing.

04

Know the two QR flows

At a merchant, either you scan the merchant’s QR code and enter the amount, or the merchant scans your payment code. Confirm the merchant name and amount before approving.

05

Make a small test payment

Test at a staffed shop before relying on Alipay for a train, hotel or late-night taxi. If it fails, read the exact error, check the issuing bank alert, card authorization, merchant category and identity status.

06

Transport and mini programs

City transport codes, Didi, bike rental and government or merchant mini programs can be convenient, but availability and foreign-card funding differ. Complete a low-stakes test before a commute or appointment.

07

Foreign-card limitations

Linking an international card does not necessarily unlock every function available with a mainland bank account. Person-to-person transfers, wallet balance, red packets and some mini-program transactions may be limited.

Think of foreign-card linking as an excellent merchant-payment route—not a full replacement for every local banking function.
08

Security and recovery

Turn on device security, keep the app updated and review unfamiliar transactions promptly. Never provide an SMS code, payment password or live payment code to a caller, courier, landlord or “customer-service” account.

Safety first

Never send passwords, SMS codes or payment details to a stranger. Be cautious if someone asks you to leave the official platform or confirm an order before the service is complete.
